72+
72+ is the number of chewy, delectable chocolate chip cookies my beloved husband made last night for bible study. Those cookies got some serious TLC as he carefully measured, waited by the oven, and delicately moved each cookie to its proper place ;). If only I had the gift of such accuracy and desire for precision that Josh has (then I suppose we might have more cookies and baked goods laying around- not always a good thing!). One of the many reasons we're "better together".

First Day of Orientation
My first day of orientation confirmed how glad I am that God provided this opportunity for me to change jobs. We spent almost 8 hours discussing the core values and history of the organization (while this may be boring to some, it was quite refreshing coming from a place that did not care how you did your work, as long as it was done at the end of the day). I am so excited and will continue with orientation the next few days.
On another happy note, we may have the great honor of hosting Matt (Albright) at our house for about a month. He has to come to Pensacola for a month of training from mid March to mid April (Aviation Safety Officer training) and may stay with us if it all pans out as planned. We're so psyched!
And Finally, a few pictures of what goes on during the day while Josh is gone playing Golf and I'm at work:
Little E (or big, depending on how you look at it) constantly looking for anyone to feed him

When we returned home tonight his squeaks reached an all time high decibel...do not be deceived...he is fed, and fed often. Edgar, when you cannot see your toenails any longer, you should be concerned!

and our vegetable garden is showing many first signs of life already!

I will have to look at my cheat sheet to see what plants are growing faster than others...if I can find it!

Work Updates
I am happy to announce that I have officially accepted a position at Sacred Heart. I will begin working in the skilled nursing facility section of Sacred Heart and then I will have the opportunity to rotate to the hospital in the future.
Monday I will be meeting with HR to fill out my paper work, have a drug screen, and I will also receive more information about the following few days of orientation. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday I will have an orientation at the hospital, and then Friday, I will be fitted for a CPR mask.
Then, I will begin working at "The Haven", which is the skilled nursing facility associated with Sacred Heart on Monday, February 23.
I will begin as a PRN therapist (as needed), however, they have full time hours for me, so I will be working full time. Then, as soon as the next board meets, I will likely switch my position to "full time", however, there should not be any real difference in my schedule or the type of work that I do, it will just be a formality.
I am excited to begin working for the second time, and truly hope that this is a great experience.
That's all for now!

The grass is always greener....
...when you mow and water it :)
Josh and I have been very proud of the work we've put into our front lawn. Several weeks ago we decided to put some rye grass down on our front lawn so that it would take the bermuda grass better when it was time (we didn't have much grass on the lawn at all and the soil wasn't great- and no, we did not know this about soil and grass...someone smarter told us). We thought we'd test it out on the front yard before we went crazy with the backyard. Here's our lawn from when we moved in:

(although it is the dormant season and the grass is supposed to be brown, we just had mostly weeds, so someone told us it would be wise to "prime" the soil with rye grass over the winter)
here's the lawn several weeks later:

It looks like it might need a haircut!
We have had a very nice handyman mow our lawn once before, but we did a little math (thanks for the math tutoring, Mrs. T ;)) and discovered it might be best if we bought our own lawnmower. I really did not want to own such a piece of equipment, but I understand how it makes sense. Yesterday was a big and exciting day for Josh! Knowing nothing about important properties in a lawn mower to have, we bought one of our own.

look at him reading the manual! I'm so proud :)

He had it put together in a few minutes

And off it goes!

The finished product: Ta da!

While Josh mowed the lawn I put together my seedling starter kit (or whatever you call it) to make an herb and vegetable garden. Of course I wanted to grow everything available to me in the store, but decided to just start out with a few being that I've never done this before ;) We will be attempting to grow thyme, sage, basil, cilantro, green onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and dahlia's (for a little color). We have various parts of our yard where there is shade only, sun only and a mixture of shade and sun, so we hope it will be a great and fun success!

Edgar really wants to be like the big boys- here he is trying to get onto Josh's and Bo's level :)
Of course Edgar wanted to be just like his old man, so he thought he'd do a little tinkering with his lawn mower (a.k.a. the dust buster!)

Getting the inside scoop
Tonight I got a little taste of what flight school will be like for Josh (and I, for that matter). Every few months some of the flight instructors and women from the student spouse club put on an orientation for spouses so that they can see what they will be doing and where they will be doing it. I went with 2 other women who I have met along the way since being down here and we were so happy to have such a neat opportunity. We got to see where their "training squadron" will be, we got to step into three different types of planes that they may fly in and navigate in throughout their training, and we also went to the simulator building to see where they do their simulator flights. We got a little dizzy standing in the simulator as we watched the screen turn as if we were in the front of an airplane.
It was a great night of learning and meeting others. I feel like I learn a little more every time I go to something like this and I am looking forward to learning as we go along as well. It will be neat to have a picture in my mind of what Josh is doing when he says he is going for a "sim" or to fly in a T-6.
Well, that's all for now!

Moral Distress
I had a good laugh today when I went to the mailbox and found my "OT Practice" Magazine and the headline article was titled "Combating Moral Distress". The several page article discussed how prevalent "moral distress" is in the OT arena because of expectations for productivity and how people handle it. I found it interesting that 38% of people polled stated that they left a job because of "moral distress", specifically in relation to documentation, billing, and reimbursement, 62% were exploring other employment opportunities.
I spoke to HR today at my potential new place of employment and hope to be getting the ball rolling soon. If all goes well, orientation will begin Tuesday.

Humbled yet Hopeful
Over the last week at work I have run into several "grey" areas that could be considered unethical, or even illegal, at times. I won't get into too many details (I would be happy to talk in person or via e-mail about it), but Josh and I have been praying about the situation and several things have happened since we began praying:
After praying about it with our bible study Thursday night, I received a call on Friday at lunch from a major Institution (hospital and skilled nursing facility) that I had previously interviewed with in the Pensacola area. Not only did they leave me a message saying that they'd like me to call them back, but they also offered me a job in the voicemail (I thought this was a little nontraditional but saw it as such a God sighting in the midst of my circumstances).
Today I went to work and continued to be faced with questions and a burning conscience and I decided to give my notice to my boss (before accepting the other job or knowing what it was all about- because I decided that regardless of other job prospects, I was not comfortable providing therapy in this place any longer and that I would trust God with the rest).
I am humbled, as I never imagined I would be the type of person to work 47 hours somewhere and then quit, but this is how strongly I felt about the things I was being asked to do. I am thankful for the many ethical questions on my recent board exam, as I kept thinking about those questions and asking myself, "is that what I'm doing?" (Of course, I am also thankful for the Holy Spirit's presence in my life and how he has guided me through this seemingly quick and strange decision).
Josh and I have been asking "why would God lead us to believe this was the right place for me to work if it was going to turn out like this?" I suppose we will not really know until his will unfolds for us/me, but I do know that he is sovereign and that this experience has taught me to never assume and to always ask those tough questions in the workplace. Just because someone else who has a lot of experience is doing something, it might not be okay.
I will begin working for this other institution hopefully next Monday (with a 4.5 day orientation at the Hospital, then 2 weeks of shadowing and co-treating with another therapist). I spent a lot of time talking and "asking the right questions" of my potential new boss to try to make sure this is the place for me. I will begin working in the skilled nursing facility portion of the institution and I then after 3 months or so I will have the opportunity to rotate to the hospital (with another orientation there) if I would like. I have not received an official offer, but hope to be talking to HR the rest of the week.
While I am a little jaded by my first work experience, I am humbled, yet hopeful that I can do what I love in the right way, not compromising patient care or my beliefs about what is right and true.
Proverbs 22: 1-5 reminds me of how God calls me to feel about riches (which is a lot of what my workplace was about- "we'll pay you well if you rake in the money for us")

to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
2 Rich and poor have this in common:
The LORD is the Maker of them all.
3 A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge,
but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
4 Humility and the fear of the LORD
bring wealth and honor and life.
5 In the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares,
but he who guards his soul stays far from them.

Brief Updates
As evidenced by my brief post below, I suppose I have entered the real world!
A few updates:
I have had 2 full days of work. Initial impressions: I like the residents, I like the staff, I am fearful of being able to provide quality therapy because of medicare rules and regulations (i.e. I am expected to see 4 patients an hour but "see" them for 60 minutes each, BUT not treat them in a group setting...I'd pay someone big money to figure out how that can all work...) The paperwork is not as bad as I expected...but there is always that possibility that I haven't seen it all yet, hehe. So far I have been working 8-4:30 (30 minute lunch) and the commute has been a little longer than I expected with traffic. I have a feeling if I adjust my hours to earlier the traffic won't be as bad.
Josh is continuing to enjoy his intramural basketball league (games usually 1-2 times a week and it will go for a few more months). He is also enjoying golf and recently joined a club down here called "Lost Key" for a great deal on a "family" membership with some other flight school buddies.
Josh's flight school date was also just pushed back to June 5 because he asked if he might be able to attend my graduation. Haha, we didn't think it would be that easy- but things can always change, it's only a tentative date.
That's it for now! Have a great week!
