Traveler's in the night

We have finally arrived to our final destination of Connecticut to visit with family for Christmas and New Years! It feels so good to be off the road and settled in.

On our way to CT we had the good fortune of staying in the Caie's (Whitney's Aunt and Uncle) beautiful cabin in North Carolina. Although we arrived late in the night, it was such a wonderful stay- much like a B&B experience. We even had little candies on our pillows when we got there. The next morning we took in the beautiful scenery and then headed to the nearby home of Josh's Grandpa and Nana Albright. We arrived to a yummy smelling breakfast (Belgian Waffles and Bacon) and then headed to Pinehurst Golf Course so that Josh and Grandpa could play a round of golf before we hit the road (isn't that what everyone does before they go on a 10 hour drive through the night? haha). The weather held out for us until the 18th hole and it was a wonderful time had by all. I (Whitney) was Mrs. Caddy for the day :). I had such a nice time seeing Grandpa and Nana's home for the first time and spending so much time with just the two of them. It was truly special.

I think we could get used to this

This afternoon, after a few hours of studying for myself and a few hours of work for Josh, we enjoyed playing some golf at the course "on board". The course is in pretty good shape for winter and we had a wonderful time! I only played 9- (I kind of peter out after that) and then I walked along with Josh and another gentleman for the second 9. Boy were there some beautiful views! One unique thing about this round of golf was that about every 3-4 minutes a very loud plane/jet flew overhead (pretty low). It was a great excuse when anyone had a bad shot and kinda neat for us newbies to see ;). On the 6th hole we had the pleasure of watching the Blue Angels (FA-18's) fly overhead in formation. They were too quick to get a picture but it gave me goosebumps and boy was it loud!

Well, I think it is safe to say we will be sorry to leave this climate but we are looking forward to the good company in CT. Before we arrive to CT we will make a visit to the Caie's Cabin and spend some time with Josh's grandparents in NC- we can't wait!

Just starting out

Wouldn't go anywhere without my pushcart!

Except, I have to admit Josh has been known to push it 80% of the time...other men on the course have warned him but he doesn't seem to mind ;) I certainly don't! We're progressing from the days when he had to put my ball on the tee in order for me to be willing to play.

Dragging my club around like linus...

I am proud to say no one in our group lost a ball in the water today!

View of the bridge (a bit foggy) that goes to the main gait on board the base

A less foggy view (Josh drives through the "back gate" from our house on his way to work in the morning- it's more direct to where he has to go)

I thought this was pretty

Wings of gold on the other side of the water :)

Well, we decided it would be foolish to get a Christmas tree this year being that we were leaving, so I decided we would sponsor this tree to be our "Charlie Brown" Christmas tree.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Interviews and News

Today I had my followup interview with the facility I went to on Monday and it went well as far as I can tell. It was frustrating to have the first question they asked be "is there reason you can foresee not being with us more long term?" and of course when I arrived on Monday, when they asked what brought me to the area and I said "my husband's job has relocated" they automatically asked, "military?" So it goes. I can only hope for the best!

It is great to have Josh's income and I am hopeful that I will be able to begin working once I am all licensed!

The interview involved a lot of tough questions but I found I had an easier time answering them in person than I felt I did over the phone (I had previously had a phone interview with the facility).

The staff all seem very nice and it could be a great place to start out if they liked me and all goes well! More to follow...

On another front, I am finally getting down to the bottom of why I had not heard anything regarding my application to the VA. It turns out they would LOVE to hire an OT (actually, they would love to START an OT department at the VA in Pensacola) but because of the current state of employment affairs nationwide, it is difficult for them to consider increasing jobs. The position I applied for was actually home health (it is not written in the application or description- it makes it sound like it is a rehab setting) but I was so grateful to hear back from someone higher up this morning as to why I had not been getting very much communication regarding my application. The position is still open and the person I spoke with recommended that I reapply, however, it may be one of the jobs that they "un-post" because of other needs.

I am really glad that I've been able to have other opportunties available and I will hope for the best! I will meet with the employment person on base who I met with the other day one more time to go over my VA application. I figure even if I don't apply to this job (or don't get a response), at least I can save the work I have done for another opportunity in the future.

Aside from interviews we are keeping busy and SO looking forward for our visit to CT for the holidays. Josh is settling in nicely and has all sorts of "random" things to do for now (e.g. getting fitted for a helmet, going to briefs to learn more about what to expect, filling out paperwork, etc etc).

We love our new place and we are very thankful for our property managers so far- they have been so prompt with the maintenance requests we submitted. We have never rented a "real" home before and it has been fun discovering all the nuances that come with it. We had been using the water filter on the refrigerator door since last week when we got here and figured we'd replace it soon. Well, we replaced it and we were nearly sick when we looked at the filter our water had been going through! Yuck! No further details necessary. We are just glad to be drinking CLEAN, filtered water now (or at least that's what we've been led to believe :)).

Although we have had many rainy days since we arrived, it has been great to drive around Pensacola in the sunshine too! It is 75 and sunny today. We discovered last night that we need to stop calling the "base" a "base" as that is not what they refer to it as down here. We are supposed to say "on board" or "aboard".

Needless to say, "on board" the base is neat- there is a movie theater for 3 dollars (with 2 kids shows and 2 adult shows), a bowling alley, several gyms (at the different stations), a great commissary (grocery story) and NEX (department store- but more like a MALL down here!) There is also a golf course (a decent deal), 24 hour lighted tennis courts (free), a woodchip running trail (that goes along the sand dunes and water), a working lighthouse (beautiful to see the lights at night), indoor pools, outdoor pools, etc. etc. I'm sure there are more things but those are some of the things that I thought were pretty cool! ....If only I didn't have to go to work- oh the things I could do! Only kidding...:) I am reall getting excited to get my first job and I am even more thankful to be able to go through this holiday season without worrying about taking time off or having to be far from family.

Well, that's all for now! Love to all :)

Job hunting is a full time job!

Well,

Yesterday marked my first "real interview"...well, kind of-haha.

I went to a skilled nursing facility associated with a major hospital in Pensacola for a "peer interview" yesterday. However, the facility is down on therapists and a permanent occupational therapist (they have a few contract therapists as well) who was supposed to be a part of the peer interview was stuck in South Florida from a weekend flight. The rehab director asked if I could come back on Wednesday for the "peer interview".

Needless to say, I was able to meet with the rehabilitation director (the person I had a telephone interview with) and I went for a tour of the facility. I also stayed for a holiday lunch provided by one of the physical therapists to mix and mingle (as many of the therapists at the lunch would be the ones in my peer interview on Wednesday). I was disappointed about the interview being postponed, however, it seemed like a positive experience overall and I hope I left a great impression :).

This morning I met with an employment "person" (don't remember his official title) at the Fleet and Family Support Center on base. I mainly met with him to discuss how I might get an "in" with health care jobs related to the federal government (I had applied to an open OT position at the VA in October but have not heard about my application and there is no way for me to contact the facility directly). Anyways, this gentleman was incredibly helpful and kind in helping me understand how to apply for a job with the federal government (i.e. doing exactly the opposite of what I assumed- I had assumed being concise and brief would be preferred). He gave me several websites to post a "profile" on and many tips on how to rearrange my resume for this type of job. Last but certainly not least, he had a contact at the VA and was able to call the department I was applying to and left a message with one of the therapists to have the supervisor call him back. I was so thankful for the help only he was able to provide (as it would not have been preferred for me to try to contact these people directly). I am hoping to hear back from this man regarding what might be some useful steps for how to get an "in", etc etc. While I may not get a job with the federal government at this duty station, it is a long application process and it can only help to do these things now. This summer the President introduced a new legislation that gives military spouses priority for jobs with the federal government, however, the man I spoke with said it might take awhile for everyone to get on the same page.

So, I have a few things boiling in my pot and I am hoping for a great opportunity! It is a funny time of year being that I am initiating these things and then Josh and I will leave for CT, but I'm sure it will all work out.

Now I am off to rework all of my applications, try to recover our missing household goods, change my health care insurance provider, and maybe, just maybe I'll get some studying in!
